Researchers at the Max Planck Institute for Intelligent Systems (MPI-IS) in Stuttgart conducted a study to find out how animals learn to walk – to do so, they built a four-legged robot the size of a dog. The robot learned to move smoothly in just one hour.

Researchers from Columbia University have created a robot that is able to learn a model of its entire body, without human assistance. In a new study, the researchers show how their robot created a model of itself and then used that model to plan movement, achieve goals and avoid obstacles in various situations. The robot even automatically recognized and then repaired damage to its body. Such machines could contribute to the development of more advanced autonomous robots.

The results of a study published by the American Psychological Association indicate that when robots appear to engage with humans and display human-like emotions, people may perceive them as capable of “thinking” or acting based on their own beliefs and desires rather than their programs. These findings show that people may be more likely to believe that artificial intelligence is capable of independent thought when it gives the impression that it can behave just like humans. This could influence the design of social robots of the future.

Researchers at MIT have produced smart fabrics that conform tightly to the body, allowing them to sense the wearer’s posture and movements. By using a special type of plastic thread and using heat to melt it slightly – the researchers were able to greatly improve the precision of the pressure sensors (3DKnITS) woven into the fabrics. They used this process to create a “smart” shoe and mat, and then built a hardware and software system to measure and interpret the data from the pressure sensors. The machine learning system predicted the movements and poses performed by a person standing on the smart mat with about 99 percent accuracy. The technique could have many applications, especially in healthcare and rehabilitation. For example, it could be used to make smart shoes that track the gait of a person who is learning to walk again after an injury.

Chiny is working to improve smart courts. Artificial intelligence has now begun to help improve the functioning of courts, draft legislation and is expected to detect “human errors” in court rulings. Judges must consult the AI on every case, and if they reject the machine’s recommendation, they must provide written reasons. The AI has also been linked to police databases and China’s Social Credit System, giving it the power to punish people – for example, by automatically putting a thief’s property up for sale online.
